Frequently Asked Questions

Record Availability

A fire occurred in 1865 which destroyed some of the records present in the courthouse at that time.

Our records span from the 1800s to the early 1900s. For more recent records you must contact the originating office.

We can send some records via e-mail. Please Contact Us to see if the record is available. You may also schedule a visit and request a physical copy. Black and white copies are $.25 per page (this fee is waived for reproductions under 20 pages). Certified copies are $5.00 each.

For birth and death records, please contact the Tennessee Office of Vital Records.

Visiting the Archives

We expect common courtesy for our staff and our records. For more details, see our About page.

While scheduling an appointment is not strictly required, making one will allow us to gather necessary materials prior to your visit and provide a better experience.

You may take photos of the records, however we do not allow document scanners, and all uses of the material must follow applicable copyright law. For more info, see our About page.
